WILBUR WRIGHT CLASS OF 1956

54th REUNION, COCKTAIL PARTY AND  PICNIC
Aug. 20 and 21, 2010

Slide Show
[Notes on slide usage]

We had a wonderful time at the Friday night party in Linda King Fadely's penthouse party room. It broke up early - says something about our age!

The picnic on Saturday was well attended even though there was a bit of rain. We were comfortable inside the beautiful shelter and even had room for Larry Wright's "Cornhole" game. Ribbons were awarded for the winners.

Ron Vincent and Don Winegar were our grill cooks. The results were the delicious hamburgers, hot dogs, and brats. They even had roasting ears, brought by Dave Swartz, Pat Newman Fenner and Jan Marquardt Gifford did the shopping and Pat delivered it to the shelter. Ron's wife, Paula, pitched in with Joan Shea Danley to cover the tables and layout the tableware and condiments. Linda King Fadely, Ken Mann, Guy Gifford and Doug James rounded out the Committee by carrying and setting up.

When the rest of the alumni arrived with their tasty covered dishes and desserts, we had a nice array of food and everyone ate to their fill and talked and talked.

There were pictures to share and games to play and I'm pretty certain that everyone enjoyed themselves.

Be sure to let us know what you would like to do for our 55th reunion.

I am sorry for those who couldn't come. We missed you.

Ground Breaking for New School
[UPDATE]

Dear Gwen and Alumni;

I was hoping that I could announce that the Dayton School Board was going to give us an Alumni Room inside the new school. On Thursday August 26th, (My husband the civil engineer from AK Steel, myself, Guy Gifford and Ron Vincent both in the class of 1956) had a meeting with that architects that are still designing the school plans. They showed us a space on the left side of Pleasant Street where we could build, a building that they would draw up that belongs to the Dayton Board of Education. That would cost approximately $275,000 to $300,000. We would have to have our own furnace/AC, utilities, water & plumbing, insurance and pay for the electric and security.

What a deal. I told them that we were not under that impression and considered the meeting a waste of our time. They get paid by the hour so it was no skin off their back. When we left we were looking and considering the catacombs that are under the auditorium for our room. Problem is they want us to get someone that can clear out the dirt and prepare it for a room that would only have a 6 foot ceiling in it. Still not good!!

I am trying to get other help with this matter and won't have much of a clue for a few weeks. This is a FULL TIME JOB. Some people said that there won't be an Wilbur Wright High School Alumni after I die because nobody else has had time and energy to pursue the project. A few say, to just auction off all the stuff in the Alumni Room and be done with all the stress.

The other item that needed to be addressed is, "A Hall of Fame", "Walk of Fame" etc. The guys at the Milton Club are considering this idea. One of them want it for all the jocks that played in sports. I feel that the girls would be totally left out of that equation. I feel that the people in military and anyone that did good to help the communities and add such notables as Vic Cassano class of 41, Dot's Supermarket (class of 42) Robert and ??, and everyone that is listed at the end of the DVD of the Grande Finale. EX; Bing Davis, Gerry Busch, Archie Lewis, Dave Gilbert, etc etc .......... I told them as they are going down all the names in the list it would be easier to search out the 3 categories at once then do each name 3 times. If we don't have a room to display anything in, where are they going with this???

I have the plaque that hung in the Alumni Room with names of those people to donated $100 or more to the Alumni Association, inscribed on brass panels. We will need donations if this room transpires, Pray for a miracle!

How would you handle this? What are your thoughts about the Alumni Room?

Sincerely,
Diana Lee (Riddlebaugh'62) Schwieterman

Ground Breaking for New School

Dayton Public Schools officials joined city leaders, community members and school alumni at a July 27 ceremony on Huffman Avenue to break ground for Wright Brothers PreK-8 School, the 26th and final building in the district’s school construction program.

Wright Brothers School will incorporate the original auditorium from the former Wilbur Wright High School, which stood on the site.

The iconic structure will be incorporated into the building design to become part of a new and vibrant learning community. The atrium will house items for the proposed Wilbur Wright High School Hall of Fame.

Diana Riddlebaugh Schwieterman who is a Wilbur Wright alumni said, "There was so much history. Wilbur Wright was a city within itself. If you missed a day of school, you really missed out on a lot!"

The new school is expected to be completed by winter of the 2011-2012 school year.

  EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

Then try 50-lb potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb
potato bag
in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

(I'm at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.
