THE LARGEST FUNERAL He was in the most productive
years of his life. He was head coach of the basketball team and athletic
director. Most of the people in town involved in sports knew him. He
survived a heart operation, but after a valiant struggle with cancer, be
died. Hundreds of students, teachers and friends came to pay their last
respects at the funeral home, and the funeral procession to the cemetery
was several miles long. They say it was one of the largest funerals ever
held in Dayton. THE SMALLEST FUNERAL Miss W cared for her mother for a
number of years and never married. She had few close friends or relatives,
and therefore devoted much of her energy to her music classes. Her groups
won several awards in state competitions, and many of her students went on
to careers in music. Miss W became ill about the time she was ready for
retirement and spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home. She
had tunnel vision and 'Was completely paralyzed except for one leg. The
art teacher once made her a valentine made of heart shaped pictures of her
former colleagues. The teacher who took the valentine to her couldn't tell
whether she recognized her former friends or not. But time passes, and
people forget. Of the hundreds of teachers and students Miss W had known,
only six came to her funeral. THE SUDDEN RETIREMENT There are always a few teachers
upset when they return to school in September and look at their class
schedule for the year. They become angry at the principal or the
counselors because they have been given too many preparations or a
planning period that comes at an inconvenient time. Most teachers only
complain when this happens, but Mr. B took action. He told the principal
that he had always had an extra unassigned period because ' he was
athletic director and was not about to change after forty two years of
teaching. When it became apparent that Mr. B was not going to get the
extra period to work on athletic activities, he picked up the principal's
phone, called his wife who taught at another school, and said, "Dear, I'll
pick you up in twenty minutes. We have just retired." He walked out the
door and never returned.
